Your one-rep max (1RM) is the heaviest weight you can lift for a single complete repetition with proper form. It is the foundation of most strength-training programs because nearly every percentage-based program, from powerlifting to general strength building, prescribes work sets as a percentage of your 1RM. Testing a true 1RM in person is risky and fatiguing, so this calculator estimates it from a weight and rep count you have already lifted safely.
Two formulas are used here: the Epley formula and the Brzycki formula. Epley assumes your strength scales fairly linearly with reps, while Brzycki assumes a slightly steeper curve as reps increase. Averaging the two gives a more balanced estimate than relying on either formula alone, especially in the moderate rep ranges most people use for testing.
Original insight: the lower your test reps, the more accurate your estimate. Epley and Brzycki are both built on the assumption of a linear or near-linear relationship between reps and load, but real strength curves are not perfectly linear, especially past 10 reps. The two formulas tend to agree closely for sets of 1 to 5 reps and diverge more as reps climb toward 12 or higher. If you want the most reliable 1RM estimate, test with a weight you can lift for 3 to 6 reps rather than 15 or 20. If your Epley and Brzycki numbers in the results above differ by a wide margin, treat that as a signal that your test set was too high-rep for a precise estimate.
For most lifters, formula-based estimates land within about 5 to 10 pounds of a true tested max when based on a set of 3 to 6 reps performed with good form. Accuracy decreases for very high rep sets, untrained lifters, and exercises that rely heavily on technique, such as the Olympic lifts.
Not without careful preparation. A true 1RM attempt should only be done with a proper warm-up, a spotter for barbell exercises, and ideally under the guidance of an experienced coach. Most training programs use the estimate to set percentages for everyday training rather than as a number to test directly.
The two formulas use different mathematical curves to relate reps to load. They produce nearly identical results for low rep counts but diverge more as the rep count increases, since neither formula perfectly models the body's true strength curve at high repetitions.
The percentage table converts your estimated 1RM into specific weights for common training percentages. These are used to plan work sets: lower percentages (around 65 to 75%) are typical for hypertrophy work, while higher percentages (85% and above) are used for strength and peaking phases.
As you get stronger, your estimated 1RM will increase. Many lifters recalculate every 4 to 8 weeks, or whenever they hit a new personal best on a working set, so that training percentages stay aligned with current strength levels.
